Analytics is one of those things that hasn’t always been at the top of my priority list until recently. Google Analytics has many features I’ve never used before because I haven’t had the time to sit down and really investigate what they can do for me and my clients. A few months ago, in one of my late night GA adventures, I found a section on event tracking, a small love soon formed. Like most of you out there I often find myself creating different CTA’s (Calls to Action) and wonder how effective they really are. Google Analytics allows you to setup goals but that really doesn’t track the effectiveness of your specific CTA’s. more...

Was ich kleinen Webseiten-Betreibern rate?
Früher nannte man solche Autoren “freie Journalisten”. ;-)

Aufruf: Zeigt her Eure Zahlen!

And? I gives you insights in the behavior of your users. You can use it to optimize the workflow, or just to measure, if an action on your website works and how often it has been used. I just started a workshop to setup a “KPI-desktop” were I will implement an example for this event-tracking in a later part of the series.

Interested in how to use the Google Analytics API and create a simple desktop with all the relevant data? It´s easy. I will show you:

What you will need

You should have a webhost-account, where to put some PHP-pages (Version 5 is required), a mysql-database (later in the workshop) and the CURL-extension must be installed on the server, to retrieve the data from the API. And, of course, a text-editor and for the start, the Google Analytics PHP-Class from Electrictoolbox.

And now?

Get your hands dirty and start some programming. :) Don´t be afraid. The first steps are pretty simple. It will become more complicated later, but I will provide you with the scripts you need, to build up an “ugly”, but working “KPI-desktop”.

What means KPI?

KPI = Key performance indicators. Or: The data, that is relevant for you, to make decisions for the development of your website / online-shop / business.

Ready to go?

Here is a link to the first simple PHP-pages:
-> Google-Analytics API : First Step : Getting the Account-ID

Some SEOs (search engine optimizers) say, use keywords in your domain-name. OK. You can do that, to push your relevance in Google. But think about it from a different angle.

If your already have a brand name, the people are typing your URL directly into the browserbar, or they use the google search, what more and more “normal” users are doing. Why? Because they are afraid of being redirected to “bad” domains, when they misspelled the URL. So you better be listed at position No. 1 in Google with your brand name.

Giving away money to Google, because you are not listed at No.1 with your brand name? This is were to start and save big money. Why? A known brand, should get a minimum of 30-35% of visits thru “direct traffic”. From the 50-60% of search engine traffic, the biggest chunk should come thru company or brand name keywords, if you haven´t done SEO till now! At the end, about 65-70% of your traffic is really coming thru “direct traffic”. Have that in mind, for later optimization!

So, are the SEOs right, when they say “use keywords in domain names”? Yes they are, but use this for landing pages or special websites for a specific topic, or as I would call it, for a “keyword cloud relevant content set”.

And another important thing about keywords in your domain name: If someone optimizes on those keywords, he maybe ranked above you, and gets your “brand name”-traffic. And again: You have to pay big money to google.

My advice: If you have a unique name: USE IT!

Some colleagues told me: You know so much about web-controlling, why don´t you collect these informations and share it with others? Good question. My first reaction: “I have no time for that”. My second: “Who would be interested in such knowledge”.

After some more discussions, I have to admit, that there is no source out there, that collects the basics, gives away “valuable hints” and shows how to use it for daily work.

But why is that so? Because each companys needs are different. One sells stuff, another just wants to promote their services and the next one has to life from the articles/news she writes. Therefore, each one has to look at their numbers from a different angle.

My goal with this website is

show what standard and special tools are out there

how to implement them in your website

how to gather informations, maybe from different sources

get reports out of that data, that suits your needs

define KPI´s (key performance indicators) to see when the wind turns

and give advice to improve your situation

and personally: improve my english, since grammar is not my excellence
